Collaboration in Action: The New Henson Plaza Sign

By Justin Aufdermauer, Executive Director
Some projects are special not only because of what they add to our community, but because of how they come together. The new Henson Plaza sign lighting up downtown Tillamook is a shining example of what happens when local leaders, generous foundations, and community advocates join forces for a common vision.
Building owner Terry Phillips had a clear vision from the start- create a beautiful, retro-style illuminated sign on the historic National Bank Building. His goal was to honor Doug Henson, a beloved local figure whose dedication and legacy helped shape the heart of our downtown, and to permanently showcase the Henson Plaza name.
When Jerry Dove, Trustee of the Loren E. Parks Trust, learned about the idea, he immediately saw its potential and wanted to help make it a reality. However, because the Trust specifically supports charitable projects, funding a sign on a private commercial building presented a unique logistical challenge.
That is where the Tillamook Chamber Community Foundation stepped in to help remove the barriers and connect the pieces.
Serving as the bridge, our Foundation was able to accept the generous financial support of the Loren E. Parks Trust. We then worked side-by-side with Terry Phillips to establish a long-term, no-cost lease to place the sign on his building, allowing us to successfully coordinate the design, fabrication, and installation of a fixture that will brighten downtown Tillamook for years to come.
I often say that the best community projects happen when we stop focusing on why something canโ€™t be done and start focusing on how it can be. This project is a wonderful, tangible example of that philosophy in action. When people set aside red tape and work toward a shared goal, our whole town wins.
The finished sign is absolutely beautiful, but what it represents means even more. It honors Doug Henson and his lasting impact on downtown Tillamook. Fittingly, the spirit of partnership, generosity, and neighbors coming together to make something good happen is itself a true reflection of the legacy Doug left behind.
Thank you and congratulations to Terry Phillips, Jerry Dove, the Loren E. Parks Trust, and everyone who helped bring this vision to life. Next time youโ€™re downtown after dark, take a look up. We think Doug would be proud.
