The final Monday of May is often celebrated as the unofficial launch of summer. Across the Pacific Northwest, calendars fill up with backyard barbecues, coastal road trips, and a collective breath of fresh air after a long winter.
But as the smoke rises from the grills, it is worth pausing to remember that this day carries a solemn, distinct purpose. Memorial Day isn’t just a general celebration of military service, that honor belongs to Veterans Day in November. Instead, Memorial Day exists to honor the men and women who put on the uniform, left their homes, and never returned. It is a day for the fallen.
Honoring this day doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy a beautiful weekend on the coast. In fact, the ability to gather freely and enjoy our communities is the very inheritance these service members left behind.
If you are looking to balance a bit of community fun with intentional gratitude this weekend, here is what is happening around Tillamook County:
Avenue of Flags and Cemetery Honors
For a quieter, more traditional tribute, local veterans’ organizations—including the American Legion Tillamook Post 47—will be placing traditional flags at local cemeteries to honor fallen service members. Taking a quiet drive to see the rows of flags is a beautiful way to ground your weekend.
An Important Update on the Air Museum
If your long-weekend plans usually include a trip to the historic Hangar B, please note that the Tillamook Air Museum remains closed until further notice due to significant storm damage to its roof earlier this spring. While there are no events hosted at the museum this weekend, keep them in your thoughts as they work through structural assessments and fundraising!
The origins of this holiday date back to the aftermath of the Civil War, when it was known as Decoration Day, a time to decorate the graves of soldiers with spring flowers. Today, keeping that core obligation alive can be simple and deeply meaningful:
- Pause for one full minute of silence at 3:00 PM local time on Monday to reflect on the lives lost in service.
- Teach the younger generation that the freedoms we enjoy aren’t default settings, they were defended by real people who gave up all of their tomorrows.
This Monday, let’s make sure the true meaning of the day doesn’t get completely lost in the holiday noise. Enjoy time with family and friends, appreciate the community, and take a moment to honor those who paid the ultimate price to make it all possible.
In observance of Memorial Day and to allow our team to spend time with their families, we will be closed on Monday, May 25.
Have a safe and meaningful weekend!
