SUMMARY:Eelgrass: Ecology\, Research\, and Local Updates
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Netarts Bay WEBS is kicking off 2026 with a three-part event series\, “Producers of\nthe Bay!” Our first event of the series shines a spotlight on eelgrass\, a flowering marine plant\nthat acts as a nursery for the young fish and invertebrates that form the foundation of our local\nfood web.\nNetarts Bay stands out as one of the few bays in Oregon that still has healthy native eelgrass\nbeds. Eelgrass is impacted by a variety of human activities including boating\, dredging\,\nrecreational shellfish harvest\, some aquaculture harvesting techniques\, the introduction of\ninvasive species\, and nutrient runoff from land. Eelgrass responses to\, and recovery from\, these\nactivities vary widely\, highlighting the importance of local\, science-based approaches to\nsustaining ecosystem health while supporting the important industries and communities that\ndepend on a thriving bay. So how are scientists working to sustain this vital species throughout\nthe coast\, and how can we protect the healthy beds in Netarts?\nJoin us on Zoom to hear from Dr. Tony D’Andrea\, Project Director of ODFW’s Shellfish &\nEstuarine Assessment of Coastal Oregon (SEACOR). He’ll share insights from his work\nmonitoring local eelgrass health\, including recent surveys in neighboring Tillamook Bay.\nTune in on February 25th\, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM\, to learn the latest on local eelgrass and stick\naround for a live Q&A at the end of the presentation. We’d love to see you there!\nVisit https://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events to learn more and register. The Zoom link will be\nshared after registration.\nQuestions or Cancellations? SUMMARY:Beaches\, Birds\, and Beyond: Community Science in Action at Netarts Bay
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Netarts Bay\, Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) is thrilled to introduce a new program to our lineup highlighting local Community Science projects! \n\nDuring this virtual event\, guests will learn about different research projects\, how volunteers are helping with data collection\, and the outcomes from these efforts. “Participants will hear about five community science projects happening in and around Netarts Bay that are enhancing our understanding of the local environment through collaborative\, participatory efforts” says the new Stewardship Coordinator for WEBS\, Marina Dreeben. “We hope anyone interested in getting involved and learning about the impacts of this work will join us to hear from the leaders of these projects.”  WEBS Director Chrissy Smith added “We have been eager to have the opportunity to share with the community the outcomes of different community science projects and the ways our volunteers and other local residents are working together to grow a stronger understanding of this amazing ecosystem.”\n\nOpen to current volunteers and the general public\, this event is for you if:\n\n You are generally curious to learn about new findings.\n You are involved in community science in the Netarts Bay area and want to learn about the impact of your work.\n You have never heard of community science but want to learn about new ways to support the ecological health of your area.\n You want to know what’s new with the birds and marine debris locally and along the Oregon Coast! \n\nSharing at the event include representatives leading the following community science projects: NOAA Marine Debris Mapping Project\, Coastal Observation and Seabird Survey Team (COASST) Beached Bird Survey\, Bird Alliance of Oregon Snowy Plover Patrol\, Bird Alliance of Oregon Black OysterCatcher Monitoring\, and the USFWS Seabird Productivity Monitoring Project. \n\nWEBS just launched a new page on their website to help connect individuals to different community science projects. You can find out more by visiting the “Get Involved” page or by directly linking to netartsbaywebs.org/community-science.\n\nGet more information and find a link to register on our website at:\n\nhttps://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events\n\nZoom link will be shared after registration\n\nQuestions or Cancelations?
