SUMMARY:Winter Wreath-Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) on Sunday\, December 7th\, for our annual Winter Wreath-Making Workshop. Come embrace the season and leave with your own handcrafted creation using fresh greens collected by WEBS staff and our guest presenter.  Participants will learn how to arrange lush boughs\, branches\, and foliage to create a stunning wreath\, festive swag\, or beautiful centerpiece for your home. This popular workshop fills up fast\, so don’t forget to register to assure your spot. \nWEBS is happy to have Phyllis Holmes\, a longtime volunteer of the Netarts Community Club\, share her design tips and wreath-making expertise. Throughout the year\, Phyllis volunteers her time maintaining the landscaping and flower beds around the Netarts Community Club. For the past several years\, Phyllis has offered this seasonal floral arranging workshop to her garden club and has graciously offered to do the same for WEBS again this year. No wreath-making experience is necessary. \nWe are proud to offer this workshop—and many of our programs and supplies—free of charge to help reduce barriers to participation in our community. Contributions are always welcome and help us offset costs so we can continue offering programs like this for everyone to enjoy. A suggested donation of $25 supports our ongoing community programs\, though any amount—or simply your participation—is deeply appreciated. \nEssential supplies\, including fresh greens to build a complete wreath or swag\, will be provided by WEBS. However\, if participants are interested\, we invite you to bring your own. \n\n\n \nWire cutters \n\n \nGloves \n\n \nOrnaments\, ribbon\, bells\, and any decorations you would like to include in your project \n\n \nMetal wreath frames that participants may want to reuse from previous years \n\n \nHoliday fabric or felt to decorate mason jars for centerpiece arrangements. \n\n\nWe ask that you consider using recycled\, natural and/or biodegradable materials and supplies whenever possible. \nLimited capacity. Registration is required. We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this event as we have space for. If you registered but your plans change\, making you unable to attend\, please let us know so that we can offer your spot to someone else.\n\n\nLearn more and register for this event at: \nhttps://www.netartsbaywebs.org/events \nQuestions or Cancellations? SUMMARY:Netarts Bay Salt Marsh Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Netarts Bay – Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach\, and Sea (WEBS) on August 5th for a FREE event including a presentation and guided tour along the salt marsh at the southern end of Netarts Bay. \n\nWhile exploring in this unique habitat\, participants can learn about the plants and animals\, and the importance of this environment from the forest to the water’s edge. Discover how plants survive in a salty world and explore vegetation succession from the bay to the dunes.\n\nThis program includes two parts: Starting with an indoor presentation at 9:00 a.m.\, we will review salt marsh habitats and give an overview of the common plants found in these areas and how they are adapted to survive in these salty locations. After the presentation\, participants will drive to the first location for the start of a walking tour with biologist and past WEBS board member\, Jim Young. This field-based walking tour includes an easy to moderate 1.5 to 3-mile hike through muddy\, wet sand\, and loose sand areas. Trails may be covered by brush. This program is best suited for participants 12 years and older who are comfortable walking in these environments.\n\nHOW TO PREPARE/WHAT TO BRING TO THE WALK\n\n Participants will need to provide their own transportation between locations\n Bring or expect to purchase a OR State Parks parking pass ($10)\n Long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots (no flip-flops) — expect muddy conditions\n Weather-appropriate clothing (prepare for variable coastal weather)\n Insect repellent or protective clothing – mosquitoes may be present (WEBS will have a limited supply of mosquito nets available)\n\nWe understand everyone learns and experiences the outdoors differently\, and we strive to support everyone who is interested in attending our events! Please contact us in advance so we can do our best to accommodate your accessibility needs.\n\nThis event is part of the Explore Nature series of hikes\, walks\, paddles\, and outdoor adventures. Explore Nature events are hosted by a consortium of volunteer community and non-profit organizations\, and are meaningful nature-based experiences that highlight the unique beauty of Tillamook County and the work being done to preserve and conserve the area’s natural resources and natural resource-based economy.\n\nConsider donating:  \n\nYour donation helps support the work of our organizations. Every little bit helps!  All of our workshops\, classes\, and events are free. As a non-profit organization\, we rely on donations and grants to keep us going and growing.  \n\nIf you would like to donate\, you can contribute to WEBS at www.netartsbaywebs.org \n\nRegistration is required. SUMMARY:Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species.\n\nJoin Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.  \n\nThese small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California\, Oregon\, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska.  Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.  \n\nSo how concerned should we be?  Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.”  She goes on to say\, “Native shellfish\, along with countless other species\, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.”\n\nAnd what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist\, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon\, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab\, Wellesley College\, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions\, the management of invertebrate fisheries\, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998.\n\nRegistration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets\, the Zoom link will be shared after registration.\n\nTo register and read more about this event\, visit www.netartsbaywebs.org/events\n\nQuestions or Cancelations? We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this event as we have space for.\n\nConsider donating:  \n\nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS is committed to offering high-quality\, nature-based events led by experts\, while also reducing the financial barrier of outdoor recreation. We do this by offering our events and programs at no cost to participants. \n\nYour donation helps in supporting the work of our organization.
