Superficially\, it resembles quilting but the thread is coarser and the stitches larger. The resulting work is rustic and often utilitarian and so it is considered more of a country or folk art in Japan than a formal one. There are a wide variety of classical Sashiko designs but the stitching method can be applied to patterns and designs far beyond the traditional Japanese patterns. In the class\, you will learn the basics of Sashiko while stitching a small mat\, mug rug; or you may opt to start on a larger\, more complex project if you wish. Put an extra layer of cloth under the stitching and now you have Boro – the art of Japanese mending. Also called ‘Visible Mending’ in the fiber arts community\, this rustic patching technique has gained popularity both as a utilitarian craft and a decorative art as well. The class will include a lesson on this method and students are encouraged to bring a piece of stained or damaged clothing to patch if they wish on a garment that needs patching.

SUMMARY:ASIST-Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
DESCRIPTION:ASIST\, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training\, is a 2-day intensive training program that teaches participants to connect\, understand\, and assist persons who may be at risk for suicide. Although many healthcare professionals use ASIST\, anyone 16 years or older can use the approach\, regardless of professional background. The class is composed of lectures\, small group discussions\, and interactive exercises.\n\n\n\nASIST also includes demonstrations and role-playing of common suicide intervention situations\, allowing participants to practice their newly learned suicide intervention skills in a supportive environment. Upon completion of the workshop\, participants will be prepared to:\n• recognize invitations for help\n• reach out and offer support\n• assess risk of suicide\n• apply evidence-based suicide intervention model\n• link people with community resources\n\n\n\nYou must register to attend and there is no cost. Costs are being covered by the remaining grant funds from the Coalition received from the Oregon Alliance to Prevent Suicide. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. The training is in person and you must attend both days in full in order to receive your certification. SUMMARY:ASIST-Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training
DESCRIPTION:ASIST\, or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training\, is a 2-day intensive training program that teaches participants to connect\, understand\, and assist persons who may be at risk for suicide. Although many healthcare professionals use ASIST\, anyone 16 years or older can use the approach\, regardless of professional background. The class is composed of lectures\, small group discussions\, and interactive exercises.\n\n\n\nASIST also includes demonstrations and role-playing of common suicide intervention situations\, allowing participants to practice their newly learned suicide intervention skills in a supportive environment. Upon completion of the workshop\, participants will be prepared to:\n• recognize invitations for help\n• reach out and offer support\n• assess risk of suicide\n• apply evidence-based suicide intervention model\n• link people with community resources\n\n\n\nYou must register to attend and there is no cost. Costs are being covered by the remaining grant funds from the Coalition received from the Oregon Alliance to Prevent Suicide. Light snacks and beverages will be provided. The training is in person and you must attend both days in full in order to receive your certification.
