SUMMARY:Green Crabs in Netarts Bay: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Cracking the code on green crabs; discover how these crabs are impacting local estuarine and marine species. \nJoin Friends of Netarts Bay Watershed\, Estuary\, Beach and Sea (WEBS) and visiting scientist Dr. Sylvia Yamada at this informative presentation to learn how the green crab range expansion is impacting Netarts Bay.   \nThese small but voracious crabs disrupt ecosystems by preying on shellfish and tearing up the eelgrass. They were first introduced to the West Coast via San Francisco Bay in the 1980s. They have since spread throughout estuaries and bays in California\, Oregon\, and Washington; recently reaching as far north as Alaska.  Their high tolerance for a wide range of temperatures and salinity has allowed them to become a global challenge.   \nSo how concerned should we be?  Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator invites you to “join us in-person or virtually to learn about the current status of green crabs in Netarts Bay and the proposed strategies to address their impacts.”  She goes on to say\, “Native shellfish\, along with countless other species\, are under threat due to the presence of green crabs.” \nAnd what can we do about it? Join the conversation as we tackle these questions with expert visiting scientist\, Dr. Sylvia Yamada. With degrees from the University of British Columbia and the University of Oregon\, she is a leading voice on the green crab invasion in the Pacific Northwest. Dr. Yamada has worked in salmon research for Fisheries and Oceans Canada and taught at Woods Hole Marine Biological Lab\, Wellesley College\, the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Her research interests include predator-prey interactions\, the management of invertebrate fisheries\, and the impact of introduced species on native communities. She has been following the green crab range expansion since 1998. \nRegistration is required. Select in-person or virtual ticket(s) when registering. For virtual tickets\, the Zoom link will be shared after registration. \nTo register and read more about this event\, visit www.netartsbaywebs.org/events \nQuestions or Cancelations? Contact info@netartsbaywebs.org \nIf you register and your plans change making you unable to attend\, please let us know so that we can offer your spot to someone else. We want to ensure that as many people are able to enjoy this event as we have space for. \nConsider donating:   \nFriends of Netarts Bay WEBS is committed to offering high-quality\, nature-based events led by experts\, while also reducing the financial barrier of outdoor recreation. We do this by offering our events and programs at no cost to participants.  \nYour donation helps in supporting the work of our organization. Every little bit helps!  All of our workshops\, classes\, and events are free. SUMMARY:Cape Lookout Stewardship Day
DESCRIPTION:CAPE LOOKOUT STEWARDSHIP DAY – THURSDAY\, April 3rd \nCape Lookout Stewardship Day offers opportunities to give back and work to maintain our natural areas and restore healthy coastal landscapes. \nEvery year\, WEBS partners with Cape Lookout State Park to offer opportunities to give back\, maintain our natural areas\, and restore healthy coastal landscapes. Our efforts to remove ivy and establish new native plants have made a huge impact in the park over the last few years. \nThis year\, we will continue our efforts with ivy removal and native plant maintenance\, AND we will be creating a new native pollinator garden in the day use area. Join park staff along with WEBS volunteers on April 3rd to prepare the bed for this new garden.  “Events like this not only offer an opportunity to give back\, participants can connect with others in the community\, enjoy a day outdoors and hear about the successes and challenges for maintaining the health of Cape Lookout State Park” shares Marina Dreeben\, WEBS Stewardship Coordinator. She goes on to say\, “and keep an eye out for more Stewardship Days this Spring!” \nActivities are designed to accommodate a variety of skill levels. Families are welcome. \nWhat to Bring: \n\nWater bottle and snacks\nLong pants and sturdy boots\nRain gear and layers to stay warm and comfortable working on the Oregon Coast\n\n\nWork gloves\, hand pruners\, shovels\, and trowels if you have them! SUMMARY:Fry Street Quartet - Neskowin Chamber Music
DESCRIPTION:Touring music of the masters as well as new works from visionary composers of our time\, the Fry Street Quartet has perfected a “blend of technical precision and scorching spontaneity” (The Strad). Since winning the Grand Prize at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition\, the quartet has reached audiences from Carnegie Hall to London\, and Sarajevo to Jerusalem\, exploring the medium of the string quartet and its life-affirming potential with “profound understanding…depth of expression\, and stunning technical astuteness” (Deseret Morning News). The FSQ’s tour repertoire reaches many corners of the musical spectrum\, including works of Britten\, Schubert\, Beethoven and Bartok alongside contempo rary works. The complete quartets of Béla Bartók have been prominent in the quartet’s repertoire. The Fry Street Quartet is privileged to perform on a set of rare Italian instruments on loan from a private foundation. The instruments of the quartet include violins by J.B. Guadagnini and Pietro Giacomo Rogeri\, a viola by Giovanni Battista Rogeri\, and a cello by Andrea Guarneri. \nThe Fry Street Quartet holds the Dan C. and Manon Caine Russell Endowed String Quartet Residency at the Caine College of the Arts at Utah State University and has recently celebrated their 20th Anniversary season at USU.
